POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The primary responsibility of the Therapist/Team Leader is to maintain a direct caseload of about 10-12 clients with social, behavioral, substance abuse, academic and/or emotional issues.  They develop, deliver and manage all components of individual and family therapy while at Benchmark Transitions.  Therapists may counsel individuals, families, or groups or engage in prevention programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinating with the interdisciplinary team in the development of treatment plans and interventions.
  • Facilitation of individual, family & group sessions.
  • Ask questions that will help clients identify their feelings and behaviors.
  • Counsel clients on concerns, such as unsatisfactory relationships, addictive behavior, divorce and separation, child rearing, home management, and financial difficulties.
  • Provide regular communications to treatment team members, family members, referral sources, utilization review specialists, law enforcement and other related professionals
  • Encourage individuals and family members to develop and use skills and strategies for confronting their problems in a constructive manner.
  • Maintain case files that include activities, treatment plans, progress notes, evaluations, recommendations and discharge planning.
  • Collect information about clients, using techniques such as testing, interviewing, discussion, and observation.
  • Determine whether clients should be counseled or referred to other specialists in such fields as medicine, psychiatry, and legal aid.
  • Confer with clients to develop plans for posttreatment activities.
  • Follow up on results of counseling programs and clients' adjustments to determine the effectiveness of programs.
  • Provide instructions to clients on how to obtain help with legal, financial, and other personal issues.
  • Gather information from doctors, schools, social workers, juvenile counselors, law enforcement personnel, and others to make recommendations to courts for resolution of legal matters.
  • Provide public education and consultation to other professionals or groups regarding counseling services, issues, and methods.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans addressing family relationship problems, destructive patterns of behavior, and other personal issues.
  • Confer with other counselors, doctors, and professionals to analyze individual cases and to coordinate counseling services.
  • Provide core program curriculum to assigned participants regardless of caseload.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

  • Good customer services skills including in person, email and phone
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and create resolution
  • Proficient ability to work independently as well as in team environment
  • Experience working with program participants, parents and referents
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, ability to quickly learn program related software and hardware technology
  • Strong knowledge of general work practices and work ethic
  • Proficient knowledge of substance abuse and mental health program protocols and documentation methods
  • Ability to maintain a schedule of events and arrive promptly
  • Flexible individual displaying accuracy and dependability
  • Ability to follow Benchmark Transitions policies and procedures
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
  • Ability to work in a safe manner
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and organization in a fast paced environment during all situations
  • Ability to consistently maintain mental and emotional stability and express assertive personality when necessary
  • Ability to read and interpret documents at a basic level, such as reports, spreadsheets, and instruction and procedure manuals.

  • Proficient in crisis intervention and management, knowledge of behavior management techniques and verbal de-escalation processes
  • Must be able to interact with participants in a responsible and empathetic manner and to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screen and background check
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam and health screen
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license and be eligible for auto insurance coverage

Education and Experience:
Master's degree required, in a behavioral health field such as social work, counseling, chemical dependency or other behavioral health domain. Must possess State of California licensure, i.e., Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT); Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW); Licensed Educational Psychologists (LEP); Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCC); Additional training, certification or credentials may be required to accommodate specific program offerings such as chemical dependency, trauma informed care or other complimentary modality.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 5+ years combined work experience in residential, therapeutic, chemical dependency or other related settings.
  • Chemical Dependency Certification or Registration (CADC/RADT, etc.)
  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy Certification
  • DBT (Dialectial Behavior Therapy) Certification

Licensure & Certification

  • Valid Driver's license
  • California State Licensed Therapist (LMFT, LCSW, LEP, LPCC)
